Who they are

The Khangars form a Hindu community from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh who take pride in a warrior origin: they prefer to be called Kshatriya Khangar, claiming descent from an ancient clan of royal and military lineage. Their very name refers to “sword bearer,” a heritage that still upholds a strong sense of honor and belonging among them.

They originally came from the Bundelkhand region, from where they migrated over generations until settling in their current localities. In several Indian states they are recognized as a Scheduled Caste, a status that grants them some access to public jobs and political representation; in others, they are counted among the officially recognized Other Backward Classes. Both classifications reveal the long history of marginalization the people have faced, even alongside the lineage prestige they claim for themselves.

History and origin

Khangar identity is tied to the Bundelkhand region, from where the people migrated over time until settling in what are today Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. They claim descent from an ancient Kshatriya clan of warrior tradition, but historical records of the region's dynasties tend to highlight other Rajput groups, leaving the Khangar story on the margins of the official chronicles.

This combination of pride in lineage and historical erasure has shaped a community that preserves its memory chiefly through oral tradition and mutual recognition within the group itself.

How they live

Agriculture sustains a good portion of Khangar families today, and in certain areas of Madhya Pradesh, weaving has also marked generations, alongside trade in textiles and cosmetics. The clan remains central to social life: it decides alliances, resolves disputes, and preserves a code of honor inherited from the warrior tradition that gives the people its name.

Marriages are arranged within the group itself, reinforcing the bonds among families spread across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. In several states, recognition as a Scheduled Caste grants access to public posts and reserved seats, which shapes part of the community’s expectations for social mobility.

What they believe

The Khangars are Hindus who worship family, clan, and regional deities, among which figures such as Balaji, Rama, and Shiva hold a central place in everyday devotion. Ancestor worship also carries significant weight, joining religion and family memory in a single act of faith.

When illness or misfortune seem to be the work of evil spirits, it is common to turn to shamans known as bhopa, called on to drive away these forces through their own rituals. Faith, clan, and spiritual protection walk together in Khangar religious life.

Language and the Bible

The Khangars speak local variants alongside Hindi, a language in which the Bible has long been fully available, with an abundance of visual and audio materials. The barrier is not the lack of text but real access: few Khangars ever open those pages, and the fear of the community’s own reaction weighs more than any language difficulty. The Word exists within reach; what is missing is someone to carry it to the table of a Khangar family.

Barriers to the gospel

To be Khangar is to belong to a clan with centuries of warrior honor to preserve, which makes conversion to Christ a painful break with lineage and family memory. The pressure of marriage arranged within the group itself and the weight of reputation before the community keep any different expression of faith under silent watch. Add to this the near total absence of known Christians among them, which leaves few human bridges for the gospel to arrive from within.

Needs

As in many communities recognized as a Scheduled Caste, the Khangars still face barriers to social mobility despite formal access to public posts and political representation. The greatest need, however, is spiritual: as far as is known, there is not a single Christian among them, which leaves the community without any living reference of the gospel in its own midst.

A people with such an emphasis on honor and lineage also needs to discover the dignity that comes from being known and loved by God, something that today simply has no place in the Khangar experience.
